The gold-silver ratio tells you how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold — divide the gold price by the silver price. Around 70 is typical in recent years; extremes have marked historic turning points.
Traders use the ratio for pair trades: a very high ratio (silver cheap vs gold) has often preceded silver outperforming, while a very low ratio suggests the opposite. It is a sentiment gauge, not a crystal ball.
Frequently asked questions
There is no fixed 'good' level. Historically it averaged ~15–20 under bimetallic standards and ~60–80 in modern markets. Traders watch extremes, not averages.
